Early French "Comptoise" Tall Clock - circa 1800
*** SOLD *** |
| This is an older French "Comptoise", or Morbier in a tall case. It was made in the late 1700's or early 1800's. It has a virge (crown wheel) escapement, typical of these early morbiers, and comes in its original, traditional, pot-bellied 7' 4" tall case, made of pine. Many of these clocks never had cases, and were mounted on a special shelf made to accommodate the weights & pendulum. Of those that had cases, many lost them over the years to woodworm, which was common in the damp homes of that time. The bottom 5" of the case seems to have succumbed to woodworm, and was remade, although probably 100 years ago. The original one piece backboard is still solid. The clock works appears to be original to the case. The porcelain dial is excellent with only very tiny hairlines, no chips, and is signed "Beaudot a Chatillon en Bazois". The original brass surround is in fine condition, and sports a lounging farm worker drinking from a bottle. The original fold-up pendulum does not fold any more due to corrosion, but could be freed if desired. Included are the original weights & a winding crank. This fine clock is in running condition, but a service is recommended. Add $100.00 for full service with a guarantee prior to delivery. Picture #2 Picture #3 |
